Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are extracts of the Salvia hispanica plant, a member of the mint family of plants native to Guatemala and Mexico. They can also be found in Australia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. Many people may confuse this plant for its relative, Salvia divinorum which is widely renowned for its hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Chia seeds are not to be smoked but are meant to be eaten as per the ancient trends since the early ages of the Aztecs and Mayans who used it to alleviate joint inflammation. These small seeds are highly nutritious and can be stored for quite a long time without depreciation of their wholesome value.

Nutritional Value

Chia seeds are food additives that can be included in just about any meal mainly because they of their mild flavor. Nutritionally, these seeds yield up to 30 percent oil extracts and this is the main contribution towards their rich omega 3 fats. This rich concentration of fiber and omega-3 fats makes the seeds effective in reducing the impact of arthritis, heart disease and cancer. These seeds are highly enriched with health concentrates more than can be found in flax and other grains. A single tablespoon of the chia seeds is equivalent to up to 46 calories and less than 5 grams of carbohydrate.

Eating Chia Seeds

There are many people who take these seeds to help them meet their weight loss targets and therefore put them in water to get a low calorie effect that sustains them through the day. Chia seeds are nothing like regular flax seeds for they need not be ground for nutrient extraction. Their constituent calcium, tocopherols, phosphorous, manganese and antioxidants can be obtained by simple intake. This defines the most common intake method of chia seeds which is through snacking or addition to water.

They are placed in water for about fifteen minutes which allows them to take a gelatinous texture and become thicker and easier to consume. These seeds can also be dressed with salad or taken with sauces for a different taste. These seeds are used mainly for their gelling property to thicken liquids and for they can also be substituted in egg recipes. Porridge can also be made using the seeds in their ground form such that they are mixed with milk. In homemade preparations, chia seeds can be used to make jelly and jam by seed mixing with some sugar and pureed fruit. This mixture has to be left for about 30 minutes for it to be ready for toast spreading.

Other than its gelatinous form, chia seeds can be sprinkled to oatmeal, for taking with burgers and meat marinades. They can also be mixed into dishes with potato salads, pasta and casseroles or blended into pudding, cottage cheese and yogurt. There are many more ways in which these seeds can be eaten including sandwiches, salads and fry stirring. Smoothie lovers can also enjoy blending a small proportion of the seeds with the normal ingredients to give a rich sensational taste with unnoticeable seed content.
